The clove tree, which belongs to the Myrtaceae family, is native to Indonesia. It grows to a height of 10 to 20 meters. It has lanceolate leaves and racemose inflorescences. Flower buds are initially pale in color, gradually changing to green, after which they begin to take on a bright reddish hue, indicating that they are ready to be picked before opening. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves.
